Olivia, one of our new high school interns this year was very excited to experience the world of recycled art and how Markeim worked to show art in a different light. She was able to work alongside the teens during Week 2 in the afternoons, crafting and creating sculptures right out of old paper towel rolls, and anything else in the recycling bin! Here's what she had to say: "This week was different from any other weeks I had at Markeim! The past two weeks I have had AM camps, which I enjoyed a lot! This week I had PM teens, but since the teens didn't need much help I helped the younger kids in craft camp. They did a lot this week! Including weaving, painting, tye dying and making collages! They even worked with oil pastels. They made gnomes and decorated them too. The kids were all so nice and happy."

Whether it be in Teen Camp or Pottery, even our youngest and oldest in regular camp, the soft and malleable medium has made its way on to all the surfaces here at Markeim. The teen camp created shadow boxes using plaster, and then clay to mold and sculpt their own reflections. In pottery as usual there were bowls and pots being thrown on the wheel, as well as some interesting hand sculptures beginning to grow. The big kids also got to experiment with the terra cotta as well as a softer, more flexible friend: model magic. Here we used the clay to help bring to life the spirit of patriotism in our second week's theme. We had a great time!
David, one of our youngest interns experienced the pottery camp's energy during Week 2 at Markeim. Although having little experience in the clay world, David tackled this project head on, and even enjoyed his time so much he's willing to be back at again in this third week of camp.
David had some good things to say about camp as well: "The pottery camp at Markeim is in full swing as we wrap up Week 2! Pottery is a bit different from the other camps going on, as it is more intensive art. All of the students rose to the occasion, and filled boxes and boxes of their unique clay pots, trays, and lids. Through Ms. Donna’s in depth demonstrations, everyone was able to fulfill the art of throwing, or making pots on a pottery wheel. We look forward to an exciting Week 3 and more pots to bring home to friends and family!" June 14th - Getting to Know One AnotherDiana's Point - Week 1 Afternoon Teen SessionsThis week I got to work with teens during Markeim’s brand new teen camp for kids ages 12 to 18. This camp is more of a place for adolescents to get studio time with an outlined project that are more in depth and challenging than a basic project. There wasn’t a lot of cleaning up to do afterwards which was sometimes kind of boring. I didn’t get to help out as much as when I worked with the little kids because the older ones already had brilliant ideas for their projects. Even though there was not a lot of physical work (cleaning, organizing) to do, it was interesting to see how creative the teens were. They would be working on a project that seemed somewhat simple, but the kids would still think very hard about their color selection and placement before doing anything. One of the first projects they worked on was a shaving cream project where they would put a mountain of shaving cream on their paper and then sprinkle and spread paint through it. This, when scraped off would leave a tie dye effect on the page. The other project they did was they used bubbles to create the outlines of circles along their pages which they later filled in. Another project they began involved water colors. By using a straw, they would blow the water color anywhere they wanted to and create interesting and varying lines. Using pastel and water paint, they worked with blocks of color by mixing the mediums in a unique way. All the teens really focused on their work and showed a lot of effort and passion in their projects.
The Intern Experience- from The Intern ManagerIt’s been a long way since Intern Training on June 14th and the high schoolers have dove head first into Markeim’s “everything shore” week! Camp has begun in a traditional summer fashion with discussions about our favorite beach getaways to the underwater creatures swimming just off shore. When we went down to explore beyond the surface waters, we discovered new ways to invent and create with materials we had never used before. The campers loved using shaving cream resist and building cardboard sand castles. And the interns came right in, grabbed their shovels, and started digging! It was a hot week out there but our interns never back down from a challenge. Instead, they were out there every day during break playing volleyball, doing water paintings on the sidewalk, or skipping rope with the campers. It’s great to be back at Markeim and see fresh and familiar faces. With a whole new line up of high schoolers on the scene, the kids have plenty of new friends to make.
Intern Training earlier this month helped the interns learn more about each other and become comfortable facing obstacles and solving problems with one another’s help. In the morning we had Gio in charge of the big kids while Francesca and Nicolette had their hands full with a classroom of our youngest campers. And in the afternoon, Ashly, Diana and David shared responsibilities between the teen camp and our regular PM class. The kids were already doling out nicknames and special handshakes with the interns and they couldn't have done a better job connecting with the campers and helping them learn and grow. But, along with the excitement of summer, the first week is always suspenseful because we get to see how camp runs with all of our small adjustments and new plans. Now our minor changes and glitches seemed to have been worked out and all the campers walk in with smiles and leave with one, as well as all of their morning drawings! I hope to see as much success in Week 2 as this past one had with organized and dedicated interns, new experiences, and happy children. Allegra Saggese |
