Exciting things happened in week 8 and we made a ton of new memories! With week 8 behind us week 9 is bigger than almost any other week. Week 9 has been busier than ever, especially in the afternoon! Our camp has been divided this week into Little Kids with Ms. Jennifer, Big Kids with various teachers including Mr. Johnathan, and Big Big kids with Ms. Perman! Ms. Jennifer's friend is back to make cool health smoothies for the kids, and all projects have mosaic themed or collages! (some of last weeks pictures of the little kids below)

If your child has been to Markeim's Summer Art Camp, please come by and see the show, now open during regular gallery hours until August 21st. There will be a closing reception at 6 pm on August 21st where teachers, students, interns, and parents are invited to share and discuss their art and summer experience at Markeim. We encourage everyone to come stop by and show their support for our newly exhibited young artists. It so far has been a fantastic summer of creativity and excitement, and we can't wait to spend the last two weeks exploring and experimenting in Week 9 with Picasso inspired collages and mosaics, as well as Week 10's silly animal and cartoon theme.

Another Intern Perspective from Week 7This week was Pointillism and Impressionism inspired by George Seurat! We started off the week by using Q-Tips to paint a picture only by using dots. On Tuesday we cut paper in the shape of lily pads and glued tissue paper petals to look like flowers. On Wednesday we all worked together to paint a giant wall mural. The kids cooperated with each other and shared the paints and brushes to get the mural finished. Then on Thursday we made homemade dough and molded it in the shape of flowers. Then we painted them and mounted them on cardboard squares. On Friday we finished off the week by making designs on a piece of paper using liquid colored dyes. We wet the paper with water so that the dyes would bleed and spread the color around. Because I was working with the little kids, they needed more help than the big kids. So I had to help them with things like cutting the tissue paper petals, painting the mural, and molding the flower. This week was meaningful to the campers because they got to learn about different techniques and paintings created by different artists, who all used pointillism in their artwork.
This week at Markeim was very fun! The theme of the week was impressionism and pointillism. I had the little kids morning class. We learned about Van Gogh and a lot of other amazing artists! On Monday we made paintings using dots, which was pointillism. On Tuesday we demonstrated impressionism by blotting paper with blue, green and white paints to make water. Then afterwards we added 3-dimensional water lilys! On Wednesday we did our rendition of Van Gogh's 'Starry Night'. The kids drew the moon and stars on blue paper with some oil pastels. On Thursday we made 3-dimensional sunflowers out of a dough we made and painted them! Lastly on Friday, we painted a big wall painting and had fun with liquid water colors on slightly dampened paper!
Don't forget parents, this week we are collecting art from anytime this summer! Slips can be picked up at the office when dropping off the artwork. 1-4 pieces per camper, please. Thank you for making this summer such a blast and we can't wait to show off your camper's artwork prominently on the walls of Markeim from August 14th to August 21st.
From our fingers to our toes, we breathe creativity and imagination at Markeim! With the conclusion of the human body, our next topic to explore is impressionism with artists like Monet. But mostly here at Markeim, we find our friendships last longer than our collages and sculptures. We make friends through sharing, learning and playing. Here at Markeim, we are happy to offer art classes with small sizes and dedicated teachers. Thanks for a wonderful summer thus far!
This week, Ms. Perman focused on having the students explore their senses and learn about their bodies by expressing themselves visually. On Thursday, they did a watercolor project and learned to about color layering and theory.
It took a little bit of imagination, hard work, and trust - but Miss Chelsey found a way to make this week the quirkiest of weeks with a special project for our youngest campers. This week all the kids on Friday were asked to attend camp in their bathing suits in preparation for our fascinating foot paintings! Together we put the paintbrush between our toes and tried to balance it while we painted. We also tried to paint our own feet and stamp our foot prints on the paper. In the end, the kids all learned a lot about how amazing their bodies can be!
