Olivia, one of our new high school interns this year was very excited to experience the world of recycled art and how Markeim worked to show art in a different light. She was able to work alongside the teens during Week 2 in the afternoons, crafting and creating sculptures right out of old paper towel rolls, and anything else in the recycling bin! Here's what she had to say: "This week was different from any other weeks I had at Markeim! The past two weeks I have had AM camps, which I enjoyed a lot! This week I had PM teens, but since the teens didn't need much help I helped the younger kids in craft camp. They did a lot this week! Including weaving, painting, tye dying and making collages! They even worked with oil pastels. They made gnomes and decorated them too. The kids were all so nice and happy."

This week we have incorporated "moving" and 3D art into the various projects. Throughout this week, the kids had the opportunity to create sculptures, several pictures with a paint medium and collages. The basis of the sculpture was to establish a 3D piece of art work from 2D cutouts. The cutouts were initially drawn out on paper as the child's letters of his/her name. The several pieces produced with paint included geometric shapes which were later filled in with watercolor paints or pastels. Most recently, the kids were introduced to a technique of art where the artist draws with sissors. They created pieces using only sissors and paper to produce collages inspired by the artist Matise.
I observed the creativity that flourished amoung the students throughout the week. Each project was interpreted differently by each child resulting in a large variety amoung each piece. In accordance to the theme, each piece of artwork in a visual piece of each childs creativity and imagination. My name is Sarah Goldfield and I am transitioning into my final year as a senior at Haddonfield Memorial High School. I am a summer intern for this year's afternoon art camp at Markeim. I love working with kids and watching how they flourish with their art ability throughout the summer. I believe everyone has the capability of doing art becasue of the idea that no two pieces are the same. With just a pencil and paper you can create a master piece. Art is my favorite subject at school and am excited to be starting AP art at my school in september. This week, Markeim's theme is Art in Action, meaning that the children are in the process of learning about movement and have been participating in art projects that involve something that is in motion. Today's concept was all about the construction of the body and what parts cause people to be mobile. This idea was introduced to the kids when they played a game of "Simon Says" and sang "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes". These familiar songs and games reinforced the concept of the body and all the parts that make it up. In the morning, the children completed a project titled Birds of Flight and Sea. Everyday materials such as newspaper, soda cans, paper towel rolls, masking tape, wire, glue, brushes, and tissue paper were used. That being said, parents, if you ask your child if they really enjoyed the project, it will be an simple, cost-effective, and fun art project to reprise at home. The goal of this project was to have the children develop a deeper understanding for the construction of a typical body, knowing that a head, arms, torso legs, feet, etc. are required. They utilized these various materials to create their favorite type of bird and correlate the construction of a body. A variety of birds such as hummingbirds, bluejays, and toucans were made.
I noticed throughout the morning that the children really connected with this project in that they displayed a tremendous amount of enthusiasm, concentration, and meticulousness when they built the birds' bodies, wings, heads, and tails. Many of the kids even sacrificed their recess to make progress on their sculptures! I really got a lot of value out of observing the kids picking out the assorted materials and finding a way to make use of them. Completing projects like these really exercise a child's ability and enhance a child's ability to be resourceful. My name is Rebecca, I'm 17 years-old, and I'm an A.M. Art Camp intern here at Markeim this summer. I'm going to be a senior at Moorestown High School and am excited to complete my final year! My central focus of art is pottery; I've been doing ceramics since I was 10 years-old. I also very much enjoy working with, teaching, understanding, and building relationships with children. Nothing makes me happier than knowing that I can make an impact on a child's life, especially through a wonderful realm such as art. I hope to work with children when I'm older.
Kids are the best creators of art. Together or by themselves, these kids can express beauties. Every kid is unique and leaves wonderful memories to cherish. These kids are working together on projects that they did in the camp. In the last two photos are a few kids making sculptures as a group and building random objects into a piece of art. Some kids are there for the whole summer, which is great! and other kids leave a whole lot of experience, but little amount of days to have fun with.
