- This week’s theme has to do with the Renaissance. The Renaissance was a cultural movement in the 14th century. Each day the kids complete a total of one or two projects. I think that this week’s projects and theme were meaningful to the campers because it helped them learn about the past. The projects they did allowed them to learn about Renaissance art and what life was like during that time period.
- On Monday the kids made a collage put of tissue paper. They cut and ripped different colors and sizes of tissue paper and placed them onto wax paper. When they were finished they took their paper up to the teacher so she could iron the tissue paper onto the wax paper. When you place the project up to a window you can see through the paper because it is wax. It was really cool to see all the different designs the kids made. The other project had to do with Mona Lisa. The kids got the head and hands of Mona Lisa on paper and had to cut it out. Once the head and hands were cut out, the kids got to draw anything they wanted. The only rule was that they had to use both the hands and head of Mona Lisa in their drawing. The kids were so creative with this project and at the end they made me laugh. Some kids made Mona Lisa a duck, a banana, etc. they were all funny and the kids loved this project.
- On Tuesday, July 15, 2014 the kids made silhouettes and got to cover a little, glass cup with tissue paper. The silhouettes came out amazing. The teacher called each kid up, one at a time and carefully drew their silhouette by tracing their shadow on a wall onto a white piece of paper. Once everyone’s silhouette was completed the kids had to trace the outline of their silhouette in sharpie. When that was finished the kids drew the things they like inside of their silhouette. With this project I had the chance to learn a little more about each kid and what makes them who they are. Each project was unique in its own way because no one likes the same exact things as someone else.
- On Wednesday, July 16, 2014 the kids only did one project because there was a substitute. First, each kid received a piece of paper and pictures of knights. Than each kid had the option to use a tracer of a knight or trace the knight that was printed on paper. Most of the kids wanted to use the tracer. After that, the kids each got a square piece of foil and had to tape their knight drawing onto it. With a pencil they traced the knight and it appeared onto the foil. Next, they took their knight drawing off of the foil and retraced the lines with their pencil or with a small wooden utensil. After this step they used black ink to paint over the knight. Once the ink dried each kid got a piece of wet paper towel and wiped the ink off their foil knight. This made the foil look rusty which was a cool effect. Next, they cut their knight out and put it on a colored piece of paper.
- On Thursday, July 17, 2014, the kids completed one project. The project was really cool and all the kids had fun with it. The kids used dark blue and white paint for the project. The project was the view from underwater. The kids put white paint into the dark blue paint and turned the blue into pale blue. They made circles with the paint on their paper and kept adding dark blue paint to the white so that the blue kept getting darker. After they finished painting the water they used black paint to paint silhouettes of sea creatures. In the end the project looked really cool.
- On Friday, July 18, 2014, the campers did a project that didn’t have to do with the theme of the week. To begin, the campers drew in pencil an underwater scene such as a fish tank or an aquarium. After that the campers colored in what they drew in pencil after they got the OK from the substitute. Than after snack the campers used blue water color paint to paint the water in their projects. The project looked really neat at the end with the combination of the crayon and paint.
Ashly, an upcoming junior at Cherry Hill West High School worked last week as an intern in the afternoon. She had a lot of responsibility being mostly in charge in the PM camp, and learned a lot about the kids. She gives us a play by play in her weekly blog entry:
